Community
Therapists are passionate givers and doers, but they are not immune to vicarious trauma and burnout. In addition to our training, we support our clinicians through peer learning groups, expert consultation, and events to connect you with inspiring colleagues.
Peer Learning and Support Groups
A required aspect of JTSN training is participation in a monthly Learning and Support Group, facilitated by a Dart-affiliated psychologist. These groups are designed to be supportive collaborations for members and facilitators, where members can make inspiring connections by sharpening their new specialization skills together.
Group Format and Culture
Learning and Support Groups (maximum 6 members) will meet monthly for 90 minutes on a HIPAA-compliant online platform. At each meeting two group members will briefly present on an aspect of journalism culture as it shows up in their therapy. Discussions will integrate learning from our continuing education offerings. Members may also use group time to consult on career development issues related to taking on journalist cases.
Our network and mission will be strengthened by diversity in racial heritage, cultural and gender identity, religious and socioeconomic background. Our facilitators will strive for a friendly balancing of “air time” so we can benefit from all member perspectives.
While our training phase requires 6 months of participation in a Learning and Support Group, our staff will enthusiastically provide instrumental support to Network members who collectively wish to form an ongoing group.
*To ensure graduation from training and inclusion in the JTSN network and National Therapist Directory, we ask that participants attend a minimum of 5 out of 6 Learning and Support Group meetings.
Individual Expert Consultation
Need more time and attention on an issue related to journalism profession or culture? Leading experts on journalism culture and trauma are available to core group members for one-on-one phone consultation with a Dart-affiliated psychologist within one week of an email request.
In-Person Network Gatherings
It takes a community to support agents of truth and justice. JTSN members will receive invitations to annual in-person reunions (in non-pandemic times). Reunions will feature inspiring live speakers, a presentation on the latest research on journalism and trauma, and plenty of time to support and learn from one another.
Network members with financial restrictions may apply for a Dart scholarship as available to cover the cost of meeting attendance.
